Cairn Oil & Gas Launches CAIRA: A GenAI-Powered Platform for Smarter Operations

Cairn Oil & Gas, India’s largest private oil and gas exploration and production company, has unveiled CAIRA (Cairn Artificial Intelligence and Research Assistant), a groundbreaking in-house platform powered by Generative AI. This innovative solution is designed to streamline business operations and boost productivity across various functions.

CAIRA integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into the daily workflows of employees, simplifying tasks and improving efficiency. By leveraging Generative AI, the platform can process and respond to queries using a comprehensive library of domain-specific data. This ensures that employees have access to the insights and analysis they need to make informed decisions.

The platform supports a wide range of core business functions, including Sub-surface, Development, Maintenance & HSE, Procurement, Human Resources, Policy, and Communications. CAIRA acts as a universal assistant, intelligently responding to queries backed by data, insights, and analysis.

One of the key features of CAIRA is its dual intelligence, which combines pre-ingested domain data with its built-in GenAI module. This allows the platform to deliver precise, context-aware insights and proactively support strategic initiatives. For instance, it aids the site operational team by providing key metrics and trends from data-intensive technical reports, enabling quick access to historical well data for analysis and decision-making.

CAIRA is designed to enhance employees’ experience by extracting precise data from large pools of documents, analyzing images, handwritten notes, and scanned documents, and creating new documents. It also facilitates cross-function collaboration and knowledge sharing through the 'Ask CAIRA' feature.

Cairn Oil & Gas has been at the forefront of integrating cutting-edge digital technological solutions such as AI, Machine Learning (ML), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and drone-based initiatives. These technologies have significantly optimized operational activities. Key initiatives include DRISHTI, a data-driven reservoir and production management system for over 800 wells, AI-based safety surveillance on over 200 cameras, battery-powered IIoT sensors, and real-time steam trap monitoring.

The company also leverages drone technologies for LiDAR surveys, overhead line monitoring, and risk mitigation. The implementation of Process Digital Twin technology has further reduced gas flaring by approximately 30% and optimized fuel gas by around 18%.
